rmckinney@joplinglobe.com WEST MINERAL, Kan. — Big Brutus, the world’s largest electric coal shovel, has been named one of 24 finalists in the Kansas Sampler Foundation’s Eight Wonders of Kansas project. “We’re very happy and thrilled to be one of the finalists,” said Betty Becker, Big Brutus manager. A combination of public nominations and research by a selection committee determined the 24 finalists. Big Brutus, located in West Mineral, is the only finalist in Southeast Kansas. Until Dec. 31, people anywhere may vote on eight of the finalists online, according to information on the project Web site. Each e-mail address is eligible to vote three times, and online voters must vote for eight locations each time or the votes won’t count. Marci Penner, director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, said in April that voters don’t have to live in Kansas. “We would appreciate a vote for Big Brutus,” Becker said. “He is a wonder of Kansas.” Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will announce the Eight Wonders of Kansas on Kansas Day, Jan. 29, 2008, at the state Capitol in Topeka. After the eight wonders are chosen, the procedure will be repeated for each of the elements of rural culture: architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history and people.
