At noon today, a ceremony at the northwest corner of the new McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital will dedicate a portion of Garrison Avenue in front of the hospital as Dr. Russell Smith Way. Smith began his association with McCune-Brooks in 1937. Pat Bearden, director of nursing for many of the 46 years Smith was on the staff, will honor him with a “roast” at the dedication ceremony. At noon today, a ceremony at the northwest corner of the new McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital will dedicate a portion of Garrison Avenue in front of the hospital as Dr. Russell Smith Way. In other hospital-related news, Don LaFerla, current board president, was presented an Excellence in Governance award last week by the Missouri Hospital Association in appreciation of his contribution to community health. LaFerla has been a board trustee for 11 years, serving as president since 2001. Congratulations, Don! n At 5 p.m. Tuesday, the city will have a surplus-property auction on the Carthage Senior High School grounds at Sixth and Grant streets. The Carthage R-9 School District, and the city fire, police and parks departments will sell items including computer equipment, desks, a television set, a microwave oven, a postage meter, bicycles, ammunition, concrete fountains, tires, radios and an aquarium. Also on the block will be three school buses and a 1992 Mazda that was donated to the school district. White Oak Auction Services is handling the sale. n If your luck ran out on “National Bingo Night,” you can try again Wednesday when the Golden Reflections Club plays “Bank Bingo” from 2 to 3 p.m. in the McCune-Brooks Hospital cafeteria. The games are conducted by Hometown Bank employees, and the prizes also are a courtesy of the bank. n Other types of card games can be enjoyed Saturday at the Stone’s Throw Theatre Card Party. The party runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 796 S. Stone Lane. Make up your own table and choose your own game: canasta, bridge, gin rummy, whatever. The cost is $8 and includes lunch. n Friday is the Chamber of Commerce deadline for submitting artwork in a contest for the image that will advertise the 2007 Maple Leaf Festival. The winning artist’s work will be displayed on T-shirts, sweat shirts and all the commercial items that are produced to promote the festival. The winner will receive two shirts and will be honored with a ride in the Maple Leaf parade. The art must adhere to the theme, “A Home Town Celebration 2007.” For maximum reproduction quality, vivid colors are recommended. If you want to nominate a grand marshal for the parade, those nominations also are due to the chamber by 5 p.m. Friday. n The recent rains had no mercy for my garden. If you have one, I hope yours fared better.
