Carthage boy dies in accident on Highway 96
A 5-year-old Carthage boy was killed in a two-vehicle accident at 3:50 p.m. Monday on Missouri Highway 96 at Route B, five miles east of Carthage in Jasper County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Enoc N. Castanon was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Silvia G. Castanon, 37, of Carthage. She was taken to McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital in Carthage along with five other passengers in her vehicle: Adelfi M. Castanon, 3; Edwin J. Vasquez, 12; Keila R. Vasquez, 7; Leslie N. Vasquez, 9; and Samuel A. Vasquez, 13.
The patrol said the Castanon vehicle was westbound and was followed by a tractor-trailer driven by Betty J. Ray, 59, of Neosho. The Castanon car slowed to make a left turn and was struck by the tractor-trailer, which was attempting to pass the Castanon car, the patrol said.
n A Cassville woman was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 86, three miles east of Cassville in Barry County, the state patrol said.
Kartina L. Lemons-Maggard, 22, was taken by ambulance to St. John’s Hospital in Cassville, the patrol said.
Lemons-Maggard was driving an eastbound vehicle that crossed the center line and struck the side of a dump truck driven by Freddy L. Stephens, 45, of Diamond, the patrol said. Stephens was not injured.
n Both drivers were injured in a two-vehicle accident at 6:53 a.m. Monday on Route P, one-tenth of a mile west of Joplin, the state patrol said.
Sarah E. Himbert, 27, of Joplin, was taken with serious injuries to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, the patrol said. James E. Cooper, 24, of Carl Junction, was taken to Freeman Hospital West with moderate injuries, the patrol said.
Himbert’s westbound car crossed the center line and struck Cooper’s vehicle head-on, the patrol said.
n Two people were injured in a single-vehicle accident at 8:35 p.m. Sunday on Farm Road 1215, a mile south of Jenkins in Barry County, the state patrol said.
The driver, Kevin D. Burwell, 22, of Cassville, and his passenger, Calonese Tolbert, 31, of Aurora, were taken to St. John’s Hospital in Cassville, the patrol said.
The vehicle ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned, the patrol said.
n A rural Piedmont man was injured in a single-vehicle accident at 9:20 a.m. Sunday on Seventh Street at Florida Avenue, the Joplin Police Department said.
Bernard J. Sparrow, 64, was taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, police said.
Sparrow was westbound on Seventh Street when his pickup truck left the street and struck a traffic control box and a streetlight, police said.
