Joplin police recovered a stolen motorcycle early Thursday outside a convenience store on Maiden Lane and arrested a 27-year-old man allegedly in possession of it.
Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department said Kasey J. Simpson, 27, 220 N. Adams Ave., was arrested at 12:20 a.m. Thursday at the Cody’s convenience store at 1832 S. Maiden Lane. Simpson allegedly was in possession of a motorcycle reported stolen Sunday from 1717 S. Range Line, he said.
The Jasper County prosecutor’s office later filed a felony charge of first-degree tampering against Simpson. Simpson was also served a warrant for failure to appear on a prior misdemeanor charge of tampering with vehicles.
Niess said police had tried to stop a rider Sunday night on the same motorcycle near 10th Street and Jackson Avenue shortly before it was reported stolen. But the motorcyclist eluded them at that time, he said.
