Schools throughout the area are buzzing with cleaning and maintenance activity at this time of year.

Summer season for cleaning

Mike Johnson, director of buildings, grounds and transportation for the Joplin R-8 School district, says that to make an omelet, you gotta break some eggs.

“We’re definitely in egg-breaking mode,” Johnson said. “All the schools look unpresentable right now.”

That’s because the Joplin district, like others, is in the full swing of cleaning season.

School buildings may look empty from the outside during July and August. Though they are not filled with students, they still get plenty of attention once summer school is over.

The next two months will be busy for maintenance crews in school districts across Southwest Missouri.

“That’s the only time we can get in the buildings for deep cleaning,” Assistant Superintendent Doug Domer said. “Our staff is extremely busy over the summer.”

Johnson said every classroom is cleaned from top to bottom. Walls are painted, floors are waxed and broken things are fixed.

Workers clean the rooms first. They drag all the classroom furniture into the hallways, clean the room, then tackle the hallways once all the classrooms are finished.

Other renovation projects get tackled over the summer, including kitchen renovations, air-conditioner work and repairs. Johnson said workers are reconfiguring the rigging for the curtain in the high school auditorium.

However, the window of time for completing the work is short.

“We work all year to get ready for this,” Johnson said. “We jump right in and go as hard as we can until school starts.”

Summer-school classes remove a month of work at the beginning of summer for some buildings.

Construction also causes delays. Ron Lankford, superintendent of the Webb City R-7 School District, said construction at Bess Truman and Carterville elementaries will make the window for cleaning even smaller.
