news@jopolinglobe.com The Newton County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the drowning of a 6-year-old boy at the Swimmin’ Hole water park, a private business at 2532 Jaguar Road south of Joplin. The victim was identified as Ethan Cory, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cory of Joplin. John Cory is a Joplin firefighter. The boy, deputies said, was at the park along with a group of about 30 children from the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Missouri in Joplin. Authorities received the call at 12:49 p.m. “The body was found under a slide in about four feet of water,” said Chief Deputy Chris Jennings. The boy was transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Bob Kulp, director of the Newton County Health Department, said the county does not regulate private pools such as the Swimmin’ Hole. “That’s something that’s on my agenda,” he said. “I’d like to see us adopt some (regulating ordinances) so we can have standards in place.” Jennings said it was his understanding that lifeguards were on duty at the park, although he did not know how many or their locations in relation to the victim. Skip Drouin, director of the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Missouri, declined to comment, but said the organization would issue a statement Wednesday morning. “It’s still too fresh,” he said. “We’re saddened that this happened.” Attempts to obtain comment from the owner of the business, James Burt, were unsuccessful. No comment
