The groups formed a coalition, the Kansas Action Network, and want the state to tie its minimum wage to the federal minimum wage, which rose Tuesday by 70 cents to $5.85 an hour. The decision on the state’s wage rests with the Legislature, which will convene again in January. The state minimum wage law applies to businesses with less than $500,000 a year in annual sales, if they don’t engage in interstate commerce, which includes accepting credit cards or shipping goods to or from another state. About 19,000 Kansans, or about 1.3 percent of the state’s labor force, are paid the state minimum wage. “Now it’s time for Kansas to catch up,” Carla James, the coalition’s president, said during a Tuesday news conference at the Statehouse. “The Kansas minimum wage is a poverty wage.” The increase in the federal minimum wage affected about 100,000 Kansas workers. In two years, it will increase to $7.25 an hour. All but five states have their own minimum wage laws, and in 30 of them, the state-set wage is higher than the federal minimum. Five — Kansas, Georgia, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming — have rates lower than the federal minimum, according to the federal government. Ten tie their rates to the federal minimum.
