Relative: Joplin boy may have drank whiskey in middle of night
Police identify boy as Tyler Fecko

The family of an 11-year-old boy who died of alcohol poisoning this morning is struggling with the aftermath, a relative said.

Fred Phillips said his great-nephew, identified by police as Tyler Fecko, went to the home of Phillips’ nephew Dale Phillips at 813 Central Ave. for a sleepover Sunday night. Dale Phillips has a son about the same age as Tyler, who goes by the name “T.J.,” and the pair played together, Fred Phillips said.

Fred Phillips said Tyler apparently awoke during the night, went to the refrigerator and drank from a bottle of whiskey unbeknownst to the family.

“He (Tyler) woke up during the night and they didn’t know it,” Fred Phillips said.

Tyler then returned to bed.

When the family awoke in the morning, they found Tyler, who had turned blue, Fred Phillips said. Efforts to resuscitate him failed.

“He (Dale Phillips) loved that boy, you know, with all his heart,” Fred Phillips said. “It’s really tearing him apart.”

Other family members declined to comment.
