sredden@joplinglobe.com CARTHAGE, Mo. — Frank Blagg, of Carthage, doesn’t know where he’ll get his next haircut. Same with Evan and Brooks Wallsmith. When her sons were younger, Wendy Wallsmith cut their hair herself. Since then, she’s brought them to Lester York at his barber shop just off the Carthage square. But after 27 years as a barber, York will close the Crown Barber & Style Shop at noon today. He and his wife, Mary Jane, are retiring to Grand Lake. He says he’s telling longtime customers that he might be available for a trim if they’ll visit him there. “I’ll charge three dozen minnows and they can help me spend them,” York says laughing. York worked as a barber in Jasper and Lamar before coming to Carthage, “but the best 14 years of my life have been right here,” he said. Wendy Wallsmith says “it’s not going to be the same” when she can no longer bring her sons to York’s shop when their hair gets shaggy. York does most of his cuts with electric clippers that has a vacuum attachment so none of the hair hits the floor. “The first time, they were mesmerized by those clippers,” she says. “He’s nice and he gives a good haircut,” adds Evan, age 10. Bailey, age 7, knows his way around the shop so well he finds the booster board and puts it on the chair before the haircut, then gets the piece of bubble gum he knows is due him when the cut is over. York says he’ll miss his customers when he closes his shop. He says the business has been good for him because he has enjoyed his customers, especially talking and joking with them. “Ninety-five percent of them give me a hard time and at least 75 percent take a hard time back,” he said. That’s the case with Blagg, who tells York he always goes to another shop as soon as he leaves “so they can fix it.”
