A cook at the Joplin City Jail is facing a charge of felony forgery after police reportedly caught her in possession of a stolen temporary tag for a vehicle.
Kayla Orton, 19, 2721 S. Connor Ave., was arrested last week after police received a tip that she allegedly was trying to sell counterfeit temporary tags, said Cpl. Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department.
Niess said that Orton, a part-time cook at the jail administered by GRW Corp., denied selling any counterfeit tags when an officer confronted her about the allegation.
But the officer reportedly discovered that she had a counterfeit tag on her vehicle, Niess said. He said the tag proved to have been reported stolen earlier this year from Carthage Ford.
Police Lt. Brian Lewis said in a news release that Orton is suspected of having scanned the stolen tag into a personal computer, removed the date, printed out a duplicate tag and changed the date.
