In a year, those same students may be taking actual college courses, and receiving high-school and college credit. Officials with Missouri Southern State University and the Joplin R-8 School District will sign an agreement this morning to develop a new program for college-bound students. The agreement will set up the foundation for the development of a college-prep curriculum between the two schools. Students would take MSSU courses as part of their high-school education. “This agreement seeks a much deeper collaboration than what we already have,” said MSSU President Julio Leon. “Students receiving college credit from Southern would become more active participants.” Joplin High School Principal Kerry Sachetta is excited about the program, because it will give students a look into what college life is like. “Our counselors have been working on this idea,” Sachetta said. “We wanted to see a program where students could take classes on campus and also meet our requirements for graduation.” Officials with the two schools will work on establishing details. Leon said the program should be ready for Joplin students at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. Though the program may change, the idea is to let high-school students take core curriculum classes at MSSU. The students would pay MSSU tuition and have access to the campus as if they were traditional students. But the students still would live at home and attend classes at Joplin High School. Sachetta said students in the program would have school days similar to those of students who take courses at Franklin Technology Center. “This program will be for students who are accountable and responsible for their studies,” Sachetta said. “A lot of these courses would be held only three days a week, so they would have to study on their own time.” Some of the things to be worked out include scheduling, the amount of tuition students would pay and how the program would affect state-association eligibility for student athletes.
