news@joplinglobe.com NEOSHO, Mo. — After months of pondering where to put a painting that measures 7 feet by 33 feet, the Neosho City Council on Tuesday night unanimously decided that the Neosho/Newton County Library would be ideal. The “Centennial Mural,” painted in the 1930s by a student of famous muralist Thomas Hart Benton, will be moved to the library after it has been restored, cleaned and appraised. Council members gasped when Bob Blackwood, city finance director, said the mural is currently valued at $2,500. “That’s too low,” Councilwoman RoseMarie Carnes said. Councilman Jeff Werneke, a member of the Municipal Auditorium renovation committee, said the mural will be worth significantly more than that after restoration. The mural has been in the auditorium for many years. “It’s had a hard life over there,” Werneke said. “I think it’s even had balloons stapled to it.” Werneke said the mural needs to be in a more protected place. The Neosho Senior Center was a consideration, he said, although windows would need to be moved. Library director Ginny Ray said the mural would be about eight feet from the floor in the children’s section of the library. Children could not reach it, she said. Ray said the climate-controlled library, which has a security system, has about 200 visitors a day. “The mural would receive maximum exposure,” she said. Mayor Howard Birdsong said the city would retain ownership of the mural and would continue to insure it for its appraised value. In other business, the council voted to approve a request for a zoning change from Robert Elliott. On July 23, the Planning and Zoning Commission voted 3-1 to recommend denial of Elliott’s request to change his property at 604 and 608 Baxter St. from R-1 residential to C-3 commercial.
