rmckinney@joplinglobe.com Around 30 people staying at Souls Harbor, a homeless shelter at 915 Main St., on Friday endured a third day without air conditioning, said director Joan Lewis. Lewis said the air conditioning went kaput on Wednesday, “right when the heat started, wouldn’t you know it?” Lewis said an electrician was scheduled to arrive sometime Friday to install a new electrical breaker box. She said an air-conditioning repairman had determined that the problem was not with the air conditioner, but with the electrical system not being able to handle the load of the air conditioner. The shelter residents were getting by as best they could in the heat, Lewis said. “We’re just enduring until we get it on,” she said of the air conditioning. “We’re doing the best we can with suction fans and fans. Main Street’s hot.” Not everyone has been able to hang on through the heat, Lewis said. She said one family with four children headed for Alabama had planned to spend a week at the shelter, but they decided to cut their stay short because of the lack of air conditioning. “We got them on the bus and sent them off to Alabama,” Lewis said. She said another family also decided not to stay. Lewis said the staff is keeping residents supplied with water. She said some residents were spending the hottest part of the day at the Joplin Public Library. A representative from the Red Cross stopped in Thursday to notify residents it is operating a cooling center during the day. The air conditioning at the shelter had not been restored as of just before 5 p.m. Friday. Relief station The American Red Cross office at Fourth Street and Jackson Avenue in Joplin will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. today and Sunday for those seeking relief from the heat. The Salvation Army at Eighth Street and Kentucky Avenue will open its doors during daylight hours today and Sunday.
