Police probing robbery, possible attempted robbery

Joplin police are investigating the robbery of a downtown convenience store Monday night and a possible robbery attempt at a convenience store on Range Line Road several hours earlier.

Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said a man entered the Downtown Corner Market at 419 W. Fourth St. about 7 p.m. and retrieved some alcohol and cigarettes from store shelves before producing a pair of wire cutters and demanding of the clerk on duty the money from the cash register.

The clerk gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash from the business, and he fled on foot, Niess said. He said the robber was described as being middle-aged, cleanshaven and having brown hair. He was wearing a green shirt and blue jeans, Niess said.

A clerk at the Kum & Go store at 2202 S. Range Line Road reported at 5:25 a.m. Monday that a man entered the business wearing a towel with eye holes cut in it over his head.

The man did not make his intentions clear, and the clerk asked him to remove the towel, suspecting a possible robbery attempt, Niess said. The man apologized and left the store, he said. Police retrieved video surveillance images of the man in an effort to determine if the incident represented a would-be robber who simply lost his nerve.

No arrests had been made in either case by late Tuesday afternoon.
