PITTSBURG, Kan. — Officers with Pittsburg State University and the Pittsburg Police Department arrested a student Tuesday for carrying weapons on campus.
Nathan L. Backs, a freshman from Leavenworth, Kan., was taken into custody Tuesday morning.
Butch Herring, chief of PSU police, said Backs allegedly made threatening comments to two other students early Tuesday morning.
“He made some statements that made these students very uneasy,” Herring said. “They reported it to their residence-hall assistant, who in turn contacted their supervisor.”
The supervisor contacted authorities at about 1 a.m., Herring said. After executing a search warrant, police officers found a shotgun, ammunition and knives in Backs’ car.
A search of Backs’ room in Tanner Hall produced numerous knives.
The possession of firearms and dangerous weapons is prohibited on the campus of PSU, according to the university’s code of student rights and responsibilities.

Backs was in custody at the Crawford County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.
