Rocky Comfort man dies in accident south of Powell

A Rocky Comfort man was killed in a single-vehicle accident at 4:34 p.m. Thursday on Route E, nine miles south of Powell in McDonald County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The driver of the vehicle, Paul W. Shearer, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy county coroner, the state patrol said.

Shearer was driving a northbound pickup truck that ran off the road and struck a tree, the patrol said.

n A Monett man sustained serious injuries in a motorcycle-car collision at 7:25 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 60, three miles west of Monett in Newton County, the state patrol said.

Ronald E. Lowe, 57, was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, the patrol said.

Lowe was riding a westbound motorcycle that collided with an eastbound car driven by Holly F. VanPelt, 23, when VanPelt turned into his path, the patrol said.

n A Riverton, Kan., woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 5:59 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Highway 69 at Centennial Road in Crawford County, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department said.

Miranda S. Grimmer, 20, was taken by ambulance to Mount Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg, Kan., authorities said.

Grimmer was driving a van that was stopped at a red light at the intersection and pulled into the path of a truck rig driven by Eric P. Turpen, 36, of Pleasanton, Kan., according to authorities.

n A Joplin woman was injured in a single-vehicle accident at 12:39 p.m. Thursday on East Fourth Street, according to Joplin police.

Whitney M. Low, 18, 4607 Encore Lane, was taken by ambulance to an unspecified local hospital, police said.

Low was driving a westbound car on Fourth Street, and it ran off the street and struck a utility pole, police said.
