Published September 06, 2008 01:28 am -  Contractor ordered to pay restitution in bad-check casesPITTSBURG, Kan. — A contractor whom Crawford County authorities say is under investigation for additional business fraud was assessed a suspended sentence this week for three convictions in worthless-check cases.
Robert Alan Kafka, 49, of Pittsburg, was sentenced to nine months in prison Thursday for the convictions in Crawford County District Court, but the sentences were suspended under Kansas sentencing guidelines. The county attorney’s office said in a news release that Kafka was placed on probation for 12 months but ordered to pay $14,029.83 in restitution to victims. The defendant pleaded guilty in July to three of six worthless-check counts in a plea agreement dropping the other three counts. But the plea agreement requires him to pay back all six victims, the county attorney’s office said. The news release said Kafka remains under investigation by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and the Pittsburg Police Department on allegations of fraud arising out of his contracting business. A community meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Crawford County Judicial Center for anyone who believes they may have been a victim of fraud at Kafka’s hands, the county attorney’s office said. Anyone who believes they are a victim and cannot attend may call (620) 231-1064 or contact their local law enforcement agency, the county attorney’s office said.
