Margaret J. “Jewel” Bond gets probation in animal abuse case

A rural Seneca woman charged with animal neglect received two years probation but will face new restrictions on her animal ownership under a sentence handed down Tuesday, the Newton Prosecutor’s office said today.

Margaret J. “Jewel” Bond, 66, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of animal abuse after neglecting more than 200 dogs and a pet tiger in her care earlier this year. Bond pleaded no contest to both counts Tuesday before being sentenced by Associate Judge Greg Stremel.

Under the terms of her sentencing, she will not be able to own any exotic animals at all and will not be able to own more than four animals of any other kind, according to Newton County Prosecutor Jacob Skouby.

Newton County authorities seized 208 dogs, one cat, and one tiger from Bond’s compound in April on suspicion the animals that the animals were suffering from a lack of water, unsanitary conditions and poor health care.
