Published October 24, 2008 09:46 pm - The news is mixed for natural-gas customers in the Joplin area.
Natural-gas prices are down from the summer but still higher than last winter.
Joplin-area residents will see a drop in the cost of gas of almost 10 percent. In filings made by the gas company Thursday with state regulators at the Public Service Commission, Missouri Gas Energy said it will reduce the price of gas from $1.04 to 94 cents per Ccf (hundred cubic feet), effective Nov. 1.
However, the rate is about 12 percent higher than last year, according to the gas company’s filing. That will mean an average customer will pay a total of $77 more for gas during the period of November through March, according to the company.

If the weather is colder than last winter, the cost of natural gas could be more than estimated.

Winter rates are adjusted at the beginning and end of the season. Additionally, the gas company can make rate adjustments two more times during the year.

The gas company is not allowed to charge more for the gas than the wholesale price it pays. The company makes its money from the customer charge. That rate for residential gas service was raised by $3.60 to $24.62 last year.
