When he saw the worker emerge from the shelter in tears, Scott Kelly knew something had gone wrong.
Just a few hours ago, Kelly was out searching for his droopy-eyed companion D.O.G.; as in “dee-o-gee”, a 14-month-old Bassett Hound that Kelly described as warm and friendly and that escaped from the backyard of Kelly’s home in Webb City on Oct. 23.
Kelly contacted the Webb City Animal Control office and tracked his hound to the Joplin Humane Society. He said he went to the shelter at about 1:30 p.m.
It was his second trip to the shelter that day. He had already visited at about noon and walked among its pens in search of D.O.G., although he said he could find no trace of his dog and at that time shelter workers said they had not received a Bassett Hound.
This time, workers found paperwork for D.O.G., but when they went to retrieve him, they found he had been placed in the same pen as a German Shepherd mix that was scheduled to be killed. A worker mistakenly thought D.O.G. was the one to be killed.
Another worker was crying when she came out to tell Kelly the news, he said.
“Everyone was visibly upset,” Kelly said.
