STELLA, Mo. — The community of Stella will again honor local veterans during its second Stellabration this weekend.

Last year marked the first time the community put on Stellabration, which highlighted the opening of its new Veterans Memorial Park. This year’s celebration again will have a theme of honoring the veterans.

“It’s an ongoing thing,” Doris Dalbom, one of the Stellabration organizers, said of the memorial.

The lineup for Saturday’s event starts at 9 a.m. with the Little Miss and Mr. Stella competition. That will be followed at 10 a.m. by a flag-raising ceremony at the memorial and a singing of the national anthem.

At 10:30 a.m., a 50-piece U.S. Army band will put on a concert, Dalbom said.

At 11:30 a.m., Lyle Sparkman, assistant superintendent for the East Newton School District, will give a presentation on the story of taps, followed by a performance by the East Newton High School chorus at noon.

A parade featuring patriotic floats will make its way through the community at 2 p.m.

Throughout the day, a crafts fair will be in operation. Breakfast will be offered in the Masonic Lodge. Lunch will be offered at the Historical Society. Dinner will be served at the Senior Citizens Center next to the memorial.

A quilt show will take place at Le-Ru Telephone Co.

People also may visit the recently restored — and reopened — Lentz-Carter Mercantile Store. Paintings by Sherry Pettey will be available for viewing and for sale at the store, with the proceeds to be donated to the memorial.

The memorial park measures 165 feet by 82 feet, and features brick walkways, landscaping, a small bridge, a flag and a five-pointed star. The bricks are engraved with veterans’ names. The park honors members of the service from any branch and any time period.

Dalbom said the memorial is still selling bricks.
