10:54 a.m. Baxter Springs polling place reports no problems

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — The polling place at the Baxter Springs Community Center just before 10 a.m. was busy, but there were no lines. Voting booths were mostly full.

Poll workers had reported no problems.

In the town’s four wards, 558 residents had cast ballots so far. A Ward 3 poll worker said turnout may be running 25 percent higher than in 2004.

Bev Kuehn, a poll worker for Ward 2, said voters arrived before poll workers in the morning and a line was waiting at the door to the building when she arrived. She said there was no place to park within two blocks of the building when polls opened. She said she expected another rush during the noon hour and after 5 p.m., when people leave work.

Barbara Pruitt, 80, said she has been a Democrat since elementary school, when Franklin Roosevelt was president. She said she cast her ballot for Barack Obama.

“I’m afraid of Republicans,” Pruitt said.

She said she also voted for Fred Low for Cherokee County Commission and Crystal Gatewood for County Clerk. She said she didn’t recall who received her vote for sheriff.
