Team looks ahead

GRANBY, Mo. — It was only two years ago that the East Newton Patriots finished 0-10 for the football season, but it feels as if it has been longer than that, said senior quarterback Denny Farmer.

“It feels like five years,” Farmer said after practice Thursday.

Farmer, now one of the Patriots’ captains, played on that team as a sophomore until he suffered a broken collarbone halfway through the season. That year, the Patriots would surrender a total of 403 points and score only 67 while losing every game.

This year has been a decidedly different story.

The Patriots have built a 7-4 record and tonight will face off against Cabool in the state Class 2 quarterfinals.

Part of the reason for the turnaround is what some of the current team’s players learned as underclassmen.

Part of the reason, players said, is the impact of a new head coach.

Regardless, it has been a long journey from 2005.

“All of that was preparation for now,” said senior lineman Cody Chaffin, who played for the 2005 team as a sophomore, of the Patriots’ winless season. “This is why we did it.”

He later said, “It just makes you want it so much more (this year).”

Numbers have had something to do with the success of this year’s team.

The last several teams had fewer upperclassmen than in past years, clearing the way for underclassmen like Farmer and Chaffin to begin logging some experience at the varsity level, said Mark VanSlyke, an assistant coach.

Now, those underclassmen have matured and blossomed as seniors, he said.
