MIAMI, Okla. — The pitter-patter of pampered paws will echo through the Miami Civic Center this winter.

The Northeast Oklahoma Pet Professionals’ 5th Annual Pet Expo is coming to Miami Feb. 5 and 6.

“We are very excited about this event,” said Ray Vanover, a member of the club and an organizer of the show. “We are hoping that this is the beginning of a long tradition in Miami.”

It is an American Canine Association-sanctioned event, and Vanover said the opportunity to earn points toward a breed champion status will bring participants from a large region.

“We want to educate people about breeds and breeders, and we want to provide an event that dog lovers of all walks of life can enjoy,” he said.

The event is open to the public.

Oklahoma Pet Professionals was organized a decade ago by pet breeders interested in improving the image of the profession and keeping quality pets on the market.

“Responsible breeders are getting a black eye because of the actions of puppy-mill breeders,” Vanover said. “We work really hard to promote education and promote family. This event will do exactly that.”

During the two-day event, two levels of competition will unfold, Vanover said.

“Owners with ACA-registered dogs can compete in the conformation event,” Vanover said. “It is a showmanship event that allows breeders to gain ACA points.”

An ACA-registered dog that accumulates 25 points is considered a “champion” bloodline, according to Vanover.

“Breeders are all looking to get those points,” Vanover said. “They are valuable.”

There also will be showmanship and agility competitions open to registered and nonregistered dogs.
