Jay man killed while assisting accident victims

A 63-year-old man was killed Sunday when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to render aid to victims of a car accident in Delaware County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Peter R. Holland, of Jay, Okla., died at the scene about 14 miles northeast of Jay, the patrol said. A Grove, Okla., couple, Carl and Rita Cunningham, both 58, were injured in the previous accident and were taken to Grove General Hospital; he was treated and released, and she was admitted in good condition, the patrol said.

The couple were southbound on Oklahoma Highway 20 in a car driven by Carl Cunningham when the car ran off the road on a curve and struck a tree at 11:57 a.m., the patrol said. Holland came to their aid and was standing just off the roadway when a southbound vehicle driven by Timothy Eyres, 54, of Grove, ran off the road on the same curve at 12:17 p.m. and struck Holland, the patrol said.

Eyres’ vehicle then struck a fence before coming to rest, the patrol said. He escaped injury.

n A Pineville woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 3:45 p.m. Monday on Route E, seven miles south of Powell in McDonald County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Sharon K. Fletcher, 62, was taken to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, Ark., the patrol said.

Fletcher was driving a southbound car that crossed the center line and struck a northbound pickup truck driven by Jon D. Wellesley, 42, of Pineville, the patrol said.

n A Mount Vernon woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident at 3:40 p.m. Monday on Interstate 44 at Halltown, the patrol said.

Cheryl J. Mallory, 35, was taken to Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, the patrol said.

Mallory was driving a westbound pickup truck and was slowing to exit when her truck was struck in the rear by a westbound vehicle that left the scene, the patrol said. Mallory’s truck slid off the road and struck a sign, the patrol said.

n Two residents of Fort Smith, Ark., were injured in a two-vehicle accident at 11:10 a.m.. Monday on U.S. Highway 71, seven miles south of Joplin in Newton County, the patrol said.

The driver of one of the vehicles, Ashley N. McCullen, 20, was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, the patrol said. Her passenger, Angie Ette, 17, was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

Their southbound car ran into the rear of a southbound vehicle driven by Calvin L. Chaplin, 33, of Joplin, the patrol said.

n An Oklahoma man was injured in a tractor-trailer accident at 10:45 a.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 71, 10 miles south of Joplin in Newton County, the patrol said.

Johnnie L. Ivey, 60, of Chickasha, was taken to Freeman Hospital West, the patrol said.
