Jo Ellis: Shop and drop, then enjoy the holidays

CARTHAGE, Mo. — This is called planning ahead. If you get the bulk of your Christmas shopping done early, you can relax and enjoy some fun activities slated in Carthage around the second weekend in December.

Carthage Historic Preservation, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 8, is offering “Upstairs Downtown,” a holiday tour showcasing loft/urban living in the business district around the square. Residents opening their homes are Crystal and Ron Stiles (live music will be featured), Jerry and Kathy Gilpin, Janice and Neel Baucom, and Justin Nodler.

The Jasper County Courthouse also will be open, and a Christmas bazaar and free refreshments will be available at the Historic Phelps House on Grand Avenue. The Heartland Band will provide live music on the square to enhance the holiday mood.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 on the day of the tour. They may be purchased at several retail locations around the square. In Joplin, they are available at Upstairs Boutique, Masterson’s, Inside Out and Hometown Bank locations.

It’s a great opportunity to see how Carthage has interpreted the nationwide trend of loft living. A suggestion: Wear your walking shoes. There are stairs to climb in some residences.

n Joining the Dec. 8 holiday celebration, Powers Museum will have an open house and sale. Director Michelle Hansford says youths (or the young at heart) are invited to participate in making holiday ornaments based on World War II-era samples. There is no charge, but advance reservations are suggested for large groups. The “make and take” session will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m.

n The play’s the thing! This Thursday through Sunday, the Carthage Senior High School Drama Club will perform “Grease” at the high-school auditorium. The play begins at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Sunday matinee is at 2:30 p.m.

n My very favorite holiday fare, “A Christmas Story,” is slated for two four-day runs at Stone’s Throw Dinner Theatre, Dec. 6-9 and Dec. 13-16. The play is directed by Sonya Kew. The principal roles will be performed by Doug Dickey, Luke Mouton, Elisia Conrardy, Kevin Provins and Veronikka Kew.

The cast also includes Denise Moore, Broderick Coursey, Dakota Thomas, Tessi Foti, Morgan Sneed, Joshua Stevens, Kristofer Provins, Deborah Stevens, Kathryn Eutsler, Harry Weissenberger, Tom Brown and additional children in the children’s choir.

This delicious, hilarious comedy takes you back to the days when kids still got their mouths washed out with soap for saying naughty words, when furnaces belched out black coal dust on frustrated fathers, and when moms felt compelled to overdress their children in cold weather.

The traditional holiday menu for this presentation will be soup, ham with fruit glaze, sweet potato, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and apple pie with ice cream. Doors open at 6 p.m. for evening performances; for the Sunday matinee, doors open at 12:30 p.m. Reservations may be made by calling (417) 358-7268 or by e-mailing bbell23@ecarthage.com. Tickets are $20 for adults; $19 for seniors 55 and older; $17 for youths under 17; and free for children 5 and younger.
