CARTHAGE, Mo. — A Carthage committee has plenty of resumes to review when it begins work to select a new public works director.

Forty applications had been received as of the middle of last week and applications will be accepted through Friday, said Tom Short, city administrator.

Members of the Carthage City Council on Tuesday approved the appointment of Councilmen Mike Harris and Dan Rife to a committee that will screen candidates for the post.

“We’d like to come up with a short list and get an interview schedule set pretty quickly,” Short said. “We’d like to have someone selected by the new year.”

Short also will serve on the screening committee, along with Mayor Jim Woestman.

The successful candidate will fill a vacancy created by the death of Chad Wampler, who had held the post since October 2004. Wampler, 36, died unexpectedly on Sept. 28.

The public works director reports to the mayor and City Council. The director oversees operations of a department that includes street maintenance and construction, building permits and inspection, property maintenance, subdivision development, comprehensive land-use planning, flood plain management, solid waste contract administration and the city’s composting and recycling center.

The salary for the post is set at $48,644.
