Published December 01, 2009 12:46 am -  Probation granted in stabbing case A Carl Junction man was assessed a suspended sentence Monday on a conviction for felony assault in the stabbing of another man in downtown Joplin.
Jacob A. McGinnis, 25, pleaded guilty Sept. 28 to a reduced charge of second-degree assault in a plea agreement with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office. McGinnis was sentenced at a hearing Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin to seven years in prison, with execution of the sentence suspended by Circuit Judge David Dally and the defendant placed on probation for five years. McGinnis originally was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action in the stabbing of Stephen Wilson on Oct. 14, 2007, in a city parking lot at Sixth Street and Joplin Avenue. Wilson was stabbed once in the side of his abdomen with a pocket knife, according to police and court records. McGinnis told police that he stabbed Wilson in self-defense, according to a probable-cause affidavit. The charge was reduced to second-degree assault and the count of armed criminal action was dropped under terms of the plea agreement reached in September.
