Wally Kennedy: ‘Flavor of the 4 States’ makes its way to downtown Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — Something different is in the works for the Third Thursday event on Sept. 20 in downtown Joplin.

“Flavor of the 4 States’’ will be staged that night under a big tent in the 200 block of South Main Street. Hours will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. A separate tent will house a beer garden.

About 20 local restaurants and beverage providers will participate in this year’s event, which has been held at the Holiday Inn Convention Center for the past 16 years or so.

Matt Osborn, with Way Beyond Events, said the event will be similar to what has been offered in the past at the center, but it will have “a new look and new feel’’ because it is downtown.

At the convention center, it would cost $30 per person to get in for unlimited trips to the vendor’s tables and unlimited beer in shot glasses.

To get under the food vendor’s tent in connection with Third Thursday will cost you $15 for a coupon book and entry ticket. Separate entry tickets can be purchased for $5 for each additional person.

The entry ticket will be like a passport. You’ll get one visit to each of the food vendors. The beer garden will be on a cash basis. Organizers say the coupon book is worth $750.

Osborn said the Joplin/Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Restaurant Association is sponsoring the Sept. 20 Third Thursday. It decided to bring the “Flavor of the 4 States’’ downtown in connection with that sponsorship.

Funds raised by the “Flavor of the 4 States’’ are used to award educational scholarships to local students pursuing a career in the restaurant and hospitality industry. The local chapter has given more than $10,000 in awards to students.

Tickets can be purchased at Way Beyond Events, located above Caldone’s restaurant, 218 S. Main St., and at the restaurant. Tickets also will be sold at the event.

Going-out-of-business sale

Joplin’s oldest furniture store, Bob’s Furniture Gallery, 1736 S. Main St., is closing its doors.

Mark Parrish, the owner, launched a retirement sale earlier this summer under a big tent west of the store. That sale is over. The going-out-of-business sale starts this week. This could be an opportunity to buy quality furniture at a good price.

Bob’s Furniture Gallery was started by Parrish’s grandmother and great-grandfather as Church Furniture in 1947. It was all used furniture then. When Parrish’s father, Bob, returned to Joplin in 1962 after being in the service, he opened Bob’s Discount Furniture. It offered new and used furniture. From that evolved Bob’s Furniture Gallery, which offers leading brands of furniture.

The property involves several storefronts on the west side of South Main Street and a large lot on the west side of the store.

Ground-breaking

A row of shovels stuck in the dirt is a sure sign that a ground-breaking ceremony is about to happen. On Thursday, officials with Goodwill Industries did that at the site of the former store at 2102 S. Range Line Road.

Doug Webster, spokesman for Goodwill, said the new building will be built at the rear of the lot. The old store, a former Po Folks restaurant, had 10,000 square feet. The new store, which should be completed in six months, will have 11,700 square feet.

The new store will have a drive-through window for drop-offs. Because of that, the old trailer that was used for drop-offs will be removed. The trailer, which is still accepting donations, is temporarily located on a lot north of the construction site.

Openings

Mitchell’s Mobile 1 Lube Express, 2525 S. Range Line Road, will open its new building on Monday.

Plato’s Closet, a resale retail shop that buys and sells gently used, brand names teens and 20-somethings clothing and accessories, opens on Thursday at 320 S. Geneva Ave. The shop is in the same building as Chico’s and Comeau Jewelry in North Park Crossing.

Plato’s Closet not only sells brand name clothing and accessories for up to 70 percent off retail prices, it provides cash on the spot for merchandise purchased from consumers.
