OKLAHOMA CITY —
Oklahoma’s Child Labor Director is urging teenagers, their parents and employers to emphasize safety and caution for youths who are working summer jobs.
Lester Claravall says federal studies have found more than 200,000 workers younger than 18 are injured and about 70 are killed on the job each year.
Claravall says a survey by the Child Labor Coalition has found the five most dangerous jobs for teens are traveling youth sales crews; construction work; lawn and landscaping jobs; agriculture; and those that drive or operate forklifts, tractor or all-terrain vehicles.
He says parents should become familiar with their child’s workplace, employers should recognize potential hazards and provide safety training and the teens should not be afraid to speak up about hazards and safety issues they find.
