Death toll from tornado increases

JOPLIN, Mo. — The death toll from the May 22 tornado has increased by two.

Jasper County Coroner Rob Chappel added two individuals to the list on Wednesday. After a medical-records review on Tuesday, he confirmed that Dorothy M. Johnston, 91, of Joplin, died from injuries sustained in the tornado.

Johnston died Sunday, Sept. 11, at a Carthage nursing center. Services will be held Thursday. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.

Chappel said Johnston suffered a brain injury from which she did not recover.

Also added was Ronnie D. Holloway, 68, 2125 S. Patterson Ave. He and another person in the house were injured when a wall fell on them during the tornado.

Holloway, who suffered a spinal injury, received medical care in Joplin, Springfield and Carthage. He died Aug. 15 in a nursing center at Carthage. Arrangements were handled by Parker Mortuary.

Said Chappel: “He already had health issues, but he was able to live at home. The tornado shortened his life by several years.’’

The deaths increase the death toll to 162.
