ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Guardian Angels are setting up in St. Louis, hoping to make a difference in notoriously dangerous areas of the city.

Founder Curtis Sliwa told KTVI-TV on Sunday that the neighborhoods can use all the help it can get. The Guardian Angels say they’ll recruit and train people in an effort to revive troubled neighborhoods in St. Louis.

Red beret-wearing group members are unarmed but make citizens arrests to serve as “visual deterrents.”

Sliwa started the Guardian Angels in the South Bronx in the early 1980s.

Terry Goodwin of Sun Ministries asked the Guardian Angels for help. He says St. Louisans can’t keep fleeing to the suburbs to avoid crime.
