PITTSBURG, Kan. — Organizers are gearing up for the twice-yearly Pittsburg Art Walk to be held Friday and say it will be bigger than ever.

“We have 53 artists and 25 musicians and bands participating in the event,” said Heather Horton, a downtown business owner who is helping to spearhead the Art Walk.

Starting at 4 p.m. and lasting until 8 p.m., local artists’ work will be featured in windows and in front of participating businesses along Broadway from Euclid to 10th Street, and local musicians will perform throughout the downtown area.

Live music also will be played at Pritchett Pavilion, Second and Broadway, and Europe Park, 504 N. Broadway, for the duration of the event. The Pittsburg Farmer’s Market also will be open during the entire event at Second and Broadway.

Japan Karate-do-Genbu-Kai will perform demonstrations from 5:30 to 6 p.m. at 422 N. Broadway. At 7:15 p.m., local magician Jay Temaat will perform in the parking lot north of Colonial Fox Theatre. Hippy Clay by Alan Kirby Raku Ceramic Firing will take place in the theater’s parking lot for the duration of the Art Walk.

Throughout the evening, the P.E.A.C.E. Group Hoop Troop will be hula hooping in the U.S. Bank parking lot; the public may join in with their own hula hoops.

At 8 p.m., local artist-performer Marianne Evans-Lombe will present The Origin of Painting on West Fifth Street. At JST Bobby G’s, live music will kickoff at 8 p.m.

Also that evening, the Colonial Fox, Pittsburg State University, and Mpix will unveil the display, "Celebrating Southeast Kansas Historic Photo Collection," in the National Bank Building windows on the northeast corner of Fourth and Broadway.

The public may pick up an Art Walk map from Heather Horton at Sweet Designs Cakery, 311 N. Broadway, or from Kris Hartley at Europe Park.
