Two transformers installed at site of destroyed substation

JOPLIN, Mo. — The installation of two transormers at The Empire District Electric Co. substation at 26th Street and Pearl Avenue on Tuesday was a step toward completing the Joplin utility’s infrastructure restoration after the May 22, 2011 tornado.

The substation was destroyed by the tornado and so were most of the buildings nearby where Empire customers lived and worked.

“This is probably the last major component of rebuilding after the tornado,” said Sam McGarrah, Empire’s director of commercial operations.

Plans call for the substation to be online by August.
