JOPLIN, Mo. —
The installation of two transormers at The Empire District Electric Co. substation at 26th Street and Pearl Avenue on Tuesday was a step toward completing the Joplin utility’s infrastructure restoration after the May 22, 2011 tornado.
The substation was destroyed by the tornado and so were most of the buildings nearby where Empire customers lived and worked.
“This is probably the last major component of rebuilding after the tornado,” said Sam McGarrah, Empire’s director of commercial operations.
Plans call for the substation to be online by August.

Joplin residents lend a hand in Moore
Joplin is paying it forward. The day before the two-year anniversary of an EF-5 tornado leveling one-third of Joplin, pastors from Ignite Church in Joplin were in Moore, where an EF-5 spent 40 minutes on the ground on Monday.
