JOPLIN, Mo. —
Sponsors have been secured for each of the 10 homes that will be built by Habitat for Humanity in Joplin, and the effort is nearing its $800,000 goal, organizers announced Thursday.
Habitat’s Ten for Joplin project plans to begin building homes for 10 families on Oct. 29 as part of an effort to rebuild Joplin after the tornado on May 22.
The initiative is a partnership involving the Tulsa, Okla., and Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity teams, businesses and the city of Joplin. Thousands of volunteers have been lined up for the 16-day effort.
Commerce Bank/William T. Kemper Foundation, Helmerich & Payne, the Home Depot Foundation and the Mary K. Chapman Foundation have signed up to support the project, according to Jane Dunbar, director of development for Tulsa Habitat for Humanity. Ten for Joplin has secured commitments and cash totaling $775,000, and $270,000 in in-kind contributions.
“Everyone associated with Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity, from board members to the family selection committee to staff to volunteers, are thrilled for the families that are going to be working toward these homes,” Scott Clayton, executive director of Joplin Habitat for Humanity, said Thursday. “We know this is going to be a blessing. ... We’re getting excited for Oct. 29.”
“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support our communities have given to this cause,” Paul Kent, executive director of Tulsa Habitat for Humanity, said in a statement. “We’re so close to raising the money needed to fully fund this project. Every dollar donated over the next week will help us ultimately reach our goal.”
Any excess cash will be applied to future Habitat for Humanity projects in the tornado-ravaged area of Joplin.
In addition to a community developer sponsorship from Habitat for Humanity International’s Women Build program, sponsors of the houses are: the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation; Arvest Bank; BKD CPAs & Advisors; Chase; Hilti; Samson; and T.D. Williamson Inc.
Organizations that have signed on to sponsor half a house are: Advanced Industrial Devices, Inc.; Commerce Bank/William T. Kemper Foundation; Helmerich & Payne; Unit Corp.; and Valley National Bank.
Other major contributors include Asbury United Methodist Church, Bank of Oklahoma, the Home Depot Foundation, the Mary K. Chapman Foundation and Williams Cos. Companies donating in-kind gifts include Thermal Windows, Turner Roofing and TAMKO Building Products.
