CARTHAGE, Mo. —
Jasper County has made an official offer to buy property next to the Jasper County Jail, Presiding Commissioner John Bartosh said Tuesday.
Bartosh said commissioners on Monday signed documents offering to buy the land for $38,800 and sent it to the real estate agent representing the owner of the property at 514 and 515 W. Fourth St. The offer is the amount estimated as the value of the property, based on an appraisal.
The half-block area east of the jail contains two vacant houses, one with fire damage. The property has been listed for sale for $200,000.
The commissioners earlier authorized Norman Rouse, attorney for the panel, to start eminent domain proceedings to buy the land. Rouse and Bartosh said the county first will try to negotiate to buy the property.
The commissioners have said they want the tract for an expansion of the jail in the future.
In other action during the brief meeting, Bartosh said the sheriff’s department has asked the commission to declare as surplus about 20 vehicles no longer in use by the department. He said the commission is waiting for final information on the vehicles.
Richard Webster, county auditor, said an inventory of materials owned by the sheriff’s office will start next week. The commission earlier approved a contract with American Appraisal to do the work at a cost of $7,425.
Webster earlier said the county is to maintain an inventory of every office and that when there is a change in office, there is supposed to be an audit, including an inventory of equipment and materials. There will be a change in the sheriff’s office Jan. 1 after Sheriff Archie Dunn lost the Republican primary to challenger Randee Kaiser. Kaiser and John Karriman, the Libertarian candidate, will face off in Tuesday’s general election.
The auditor said his office has an accounting of sheriff’s vehicles, but he wants an updated inventory on other equipment, furniture and fixtures. The work is to be done by a private contractor because the auditor does not have the staff to complete the work.
No meeting
The commission will not hold its regularly scheduled meeting next Tuesday because the commission office is used for by the county clerk’s office on election days.
