JOPLIN, Mo. —
The last of three defendants to be sentenced for a robbery and stabbing a year ago at the Plaza Motel in Joplin received a term of seven years in prison with a 120-day callback for review by the judge.
Circuit Judge David Mouton assessed Kyle Bruin the term on a conviction for second-degree robbery at a hearing Friday in Jasper County Circuit Court.
Bruin, 24, who initially faced a count of first-degree robbery, pleaded guilty to the reduced charge July 13 in a plea deal with the prosecutor’s office that limited the prison time he might receive to no more than seven years and dismissed a second count of armed criminal action.
The judge ordered that Bruin be sent to a Missouri Department of Corrections program where he will receive counseling for substance abuse. Mouton also ordered that the defendant be returned to court in 120 days for a case review and possible placement on probation.
Bruin joined Amanda K. Selby, 24, and Wayne A. Tidd, 23, in robbing Jose Lopez-Sandoval, 55, of his cellphone and cash at the Plaza Motel on Sept. 9, 2011.
According to Joplin police, the defendants planned the robbery at an apartment on Roosevelt Avenue and then took a cab to the motel. Bruin provided Selby with a pocketknife before she went to the door of Lopez-Sandoval’s motel room alone and asked to use his shower.
While in the room, she sent a text message to Tidd, informing him that she intended to stab Lopez-Sandoval. Moments later, the victim began yelling and Selby’s two accomplices lurking in the parking lot ran to the doorway of the room, where they encountered the victim, bloodied and clutching his chest.
They fled the scene with his phone and cash that Selby pulled from his pockets, according to police. Selby later ditched the knife in the woods along some railroad tracks. Lopez-Sandoval suffered cuts to his face and neck but survived the stabbing.

On Aug. 20, Circuit Judge Gayle Crane assessed Amanda Selby 10 years in prison and Wayne Tidd five years. They also pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery in deals with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office.
