Carl Junction man faces weapon charge in wake of false robbery

A man who claimed that he was shot in the course of a robbery outside a Joplin convenience store, but later admitted that he shot himself, has been charged with felony possession of a firearm.

The Jasper County prosecutor’s office filed the charge against Shane W. Reeves, 40, of Carl Junction, who has a previous felony drug conviction and is prohibited from possessing firearms.

Reeves walked into Horton’s Pizza Plus and convenience store at 1302 S. Schifferdecker Ave. the morning of June 11 with a bullet wound and asked employees to call 911. He told police that he was shot while being robbed as he was getting out of his vehicle in the store parking lot.

Reeves was taken to Freeman Hospital West, where he initially was reported to be in critical condition. His condition was upgraded to stable the next day.

Joplin police told the Globe on June 13 that Reeves admitted there was no robbery and that he had shot himself. But police said it remained uncertain whether it was accidental.

A probable-cause affidavit filed with the charge in Jasper County Circuit Court states that Reeves initially told police that he was robbed of $3,000.

Police Detective Brady Stuart went to the hospital to talk to Reeves the next day and told him there was surveillance video of the parking lot. The affidavit states that Reeves at that point admitted he had staged the robbery because of “debts he was supposed to pay.”

He told the detective that he thought he might be able to obtain a little more time to pay those debts if he claimed he was robbed of the cash to pay them off. The affidavit does not state to whom he was in debt.

Reeves told Stuart that he used a gun he purchased in a bar two months before, according to the affidavit. He reportedly admitted knowing that he was not supposed to have a firearm as a convicted felon.

Police recovered a handgun they believe was used in the shooting but have declined to say where the gun was found.

No city charge

No charge has been filed accusing Shane Reeves of filing a false report. The Joplin city prosecutor said she does not believe any charge was sought through her office.
