Bands, fireworks planned for Joplin’s Independence Day fest

A concert by local bands capped by a fireworks finale is planned for Joplin’s Independence Day celebration this year.

It will be held Wednesday, July 4, at Landreth Park.

A food court where vendors will offer funnel cakes, corn on the cob, hamburgers, pizza, ice cream, shaved ice and other festival foods will open at 3 p.m.

The music will start at 5:05 p.m. with a performance of the national anthem and a set of country music by the Jake Clark Band. That band will be followed by Duke Mason at 6:05 p.m., Felonious Monk at 7:05 p.m., and Big Smitty from 8:15 to 9:45 p.m.

A fireworks show by Liberty Pyrotechnics will blast off after the music.

Parking will be available at the park or at the Memorial Hall parking lot, with rides to and from the event by the city’s trolley service from 7 to 11 p.m.

Personal fireworks and charcoal grills will not be allowed in the park.

Information: Paul Bloomberg, recreation and events manager for the Joplin Parks and Recreation Department, 417-625-4750.
