Tornado victims advised to protect assets, accounts

JOPLIN, Mo. — The tornado that smashed Joplin on May 22 has put residents on guard for another kind of threat: Identity theft.

Names. Social Security numbers. Birthdates. Driver’s license numbers. Credit card numbers. Phone numbers. Home and e-mail addresses. Contracts. Checks.

They are all in the debris left by the destruction of between 6,000 and 8,000 buildings.

There are reports of papers and documents from Joplin being carried as far as Springfield by the tornado.
