Roughton named new Webb City fire chief

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Andrew Roughton has been named Webb City Fire Chief, replacing veteran Ernie Goad after he retired.

Roughton, who is in his second stint with the Webb City Fire Department, was named interim chief on Sept. 30 after Goad’s retirement. Goad served 34 years with the Webb City Fire Department, with 18 of those years as chief. Roughton was one of four area candidates who went through an interview with a three-person committee that included interim City Manager Carl Francis, Mayor John Biggs and Webb City Parks and Recreation Director Tom Reeder.

Roughton said that the promotion to chief gives him the opportunity to help the community in a greater scope.

“Our main goal is to step up in the community and truly get involved,” Roughton said. “We want people to know that we are here to help them and to help our community to grow. This is a strong community with a nice atmosphere. We will do our part to get our name as a fire department out and to get Webb City’s name out as a great town.”

Roughton said that the biggest obstacle that the department is facing is the transition to a new chief.

“Chief Goad served the community (as chief) for almost 20 years and that’s a long time under one watch,” Roughton said.

Francis said that the city took the search statewide to find their new chief.

“We put the word out in the proper channels and we had a few out of town hits,” Francis said. “We agreed that we would interview from within to see if a good, qualified candidate would emerge in the field.”

After the committee decided that Roughton was the best candidate for the job, Francis submitted the committee’s pick to the City Council.

“The council approved the committee’s selection earlier this month,” Francis said.

Roughton started with the Webb City Fire Department in 1999 before taking a position with the Joplin Fire Department in 2001 where he was a fire marshall. Roughton returned to the Webb City Fire Department in 2009.

According to Francis, Roughton’s starting pay as chief is  $59,600.
