JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri’s college loan authority has approved the use of $30 million for scholarships the upcoming school year.

Members of the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority said their vote Friday was intended as a safeguard for students and an aid to families struggling to pay their tuition.

The move comes about a week before Gov. Jay Nixon is expected to announce another round of state budget cuts. Nixon spokesman Scott Holste declined to rule out the possibility of cuts to state scholarship funding.

If those cuts happen, MOHELA officials said the $30 million could help fill the gap.

MOHELA officials said they expect the money to be distributed under existing scholarship programs, rather than creating a new scholarship.
