JOPLIN, Mo. —
A 20-year-old Joplin man pleaded guilty Monday to the Nov. 10 robbery of the Kum & Go convenience store at 1631 E. Fourth St. in Joplin.
Johnathan J. Young changed his plea to guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court on a charge of first-degree robbery in a plea agreement with the prosecutor’s office. Under terms of the deal, Young would be assessed no more than 10 years in prison, and a felony drug possession charge that he had been facing before the robbery would be dismissed.
Circuit Judge Gayle Crane delayed formal action on the plea deal and ordered the completion of a sentencing-assessment report. The judge set a sentencing hearing for Sept. 10.
Young and Christopher L. Tate, 18, were charged with an early morning robbery of the store. The clerk on duty told police that two men entered wearing hooded sweatshirts and bandannas over their faces.
One of the men, later identified as Young, demanded money and lifted his sweatshirt to reveal a handgun in his waistband. The robbers got away with $220 from the cash register.
Tate’s case remains pending in Jasper County Circuit Court.
