CARTHAGE, Mo. —
Jasper County elections will be going high tech, starting with the August election.
Bonnie Earl, county clerk, said the office has ordered iPads that, among other things, will hold voter information used by election judges.
She said data loaded in the iPad will tell provide information on whether the voter is at the right polling place and what ballot they should receive. Instead of a paper polling book, the voter also will sign in on the iPad, she said.
“The iPad will take a picture of their information and bring it up automatically, so things will go much faster, she said.
Earl said she plans to purchase up to 100 of the devices, at a cost of just over $112,000, including licensing and software. She said costs will be covered by a $40,000 state grant and $65,000 that she has saved in the election account.

Mindenmines man charged in first-degree assault case
Barton County Prosecutor Steven Kaderly on Wednesday charged a Mindenmines man with first-degree felony assault of another man, who was in serious condition at a Joplin hospital. The felony charge against Charles Lee Kerby, 32, alleges that on Sunday he assaulted John Bryant, 58, causing serious physical injuries. The assault happened in the 800 block of Tucker Street in Mindenmines.

State auditors start review of Jasper County Circuit Court
Workers for the office of Thomas Schweich, Missouri state auditor, have started an audit of Jasper County Circuit Court. The state review was described as “routine” by Spence Jackson, a spokesman for Schweich’s office.
