NEOSHO, Mo. —
After a Newton County judge settled voting issues which halted progress in the Neosho Transportation Development District, the district’s board of directors approved a financing agreement which could allow road projects to begin this year.
TDD Chairman Gene Schwartz says it is a relief to have all of the district’s issues resolved.
“It’s been a long hard struggle, but we’re there and everybody’s on board,” he said after Friday’s meeting of the district’s board of directors. “It’s exciting again. It was concerning for a few months, but that’s all behind us and we’ve got the issues resolved.”
Directors approved loan terms with Arvest Bank which were the last hurdle to be cleared before the July 6, meeting of the Missouri Department of Transportation board of directors.
In a June 1 letter to Schwartz, Kevin Keith, director of the Missouri Department of Transportation, said a stoplight at the intersection of U.S. Highway 60 and Kodiak Road could still be completed by the end of this year if the TDD resolves all issues by July 6.
That work, originally scheduled to be completed by the start of school in August, has been delayed by questions raised about elections within the TDD.

Schifferdecker water park opening delayed week or two
Wet spring weather has delayed work on the Schifferdecker Aquatic Center, and it will not open over Memorial Day weekend, city officials said Friday. No date was given for the expected opening, but it could be delayed one to two weeks, according to Chris Cotten, Joplin parks and recreation director.

Foundation announces $10 million milestone
The Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas announced Friday that it has reached the once seemingly impossible amount of $10 million in cash assets. The foundation, which was created for charitable giving in 2001 with matching funds from Kansas Health Foundation, had $545,000 in assets by the end of its first year.

Wally Kennedy: Ye Olde King Pizza to open by September
Let’s start at the beginning. Earlier this year, Brian and Tracy Myers, of Joplin, signed a licensing agreement to bring a Ye Olde King Pizza to Joplin. This style of pizza was the forerunner for what eventually would become Joplin’s signature pizza restaurant, Pizza by Stout. That restaurant at 2101 S. Range Line Road was destroyed by the May 2011 tornado.
