Joplin woman charged with conspiracy to commit murder

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin police arrested a woman this past weekend for allegedly obtaining a weapon with the intent to have a Webb City woman killed.

Gayle J. Thornberry, 45, was taken into custody Saturday at the Capri Motel, 3401 S. Main, after she allegedly tried to obtain a weapon from an undercover agent with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office of the Department of Homeland Security.

The Joplin Police Department said in a news release Monday that detectives received a report Feb. 6 of the suspect trying to hire someone to kill another woman. Federal agents were apprised and an undercover operation was launched that led to the arrest.

Thornberry was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. She remained in custody Monday at the Newton County Jail in Neosho with her bond set at $500,000.

Police have not released the name of the intended victim of the plot.
