COLUMBUS, Kan. — A $180,000 grant using federal stimulus funds is allowing Cherokee County to buy three foreclosed houses from a county bank. Nancy Lamb, the county’s deputy emergency management director, reported to the Cherokee County Commission on that and other grants.

Two foreclosed houses in Galena and one in Baxter Springs will be purchased from American Bank, Baxter Springs. Lamb said the grant money also will allow the county to refurbish the houses and resell them or donate them to a nonprofit group.

The grant is through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program.
