$100,000 scholarship gift given to Pittsburg State University

By Emily Younker

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Pittsburg State University has received a $100,000 gift for scholarships, officials announced Wednesday.

“This generous gift has the potential to have a tremendous impact on the lives of students who might not otherwise have been able to achieve their dream of a college degree,” Kathleen Flannery, director of development, said in a statement. “We are extremely grateful for the gift and for these donors’ long-standing support of Pittsburg State University and our students.”

The donation is a gift from two members of the same family who want to remain anonymous, Flannery said. It will be used to establish several new scholarships that will be available to students beginning in the fall 2013 semester. The number and monetary amounts of individual scholarships are still to be determined, she said.

“Most of the scholarship gifts we get are not in that (monetary) level, so it really will impact a great deal of students,” she said.

Recipients of the scholarships must be from Southeast Kansas; preference will be given to high school graduates from Neosho, Cherokee and Labette counties. In addition to demonstrated financial need, students must have an overall grade point average of 2.0 to be selected and for scholarship renewal. Students also must be technology majors, a preference of the donors, who have a background in technology, Flannery said.

Flannery said the gift is part of the university’s three-year Pathways to PSU scholarship campaign, which was launched in 2011 to raise $12 million in scholarship endowments. She said the university has crossed the halfway mark of the campaign, having received nearly $4 million in cash and an additional $3 million in planned gifts.

“Donors do so much for the university, but their single most important contribution is providing scholarships for students,” Flannery said. “Those gifts made it possible for the university to provide more than $2.5 million in scholarships to students last year.”
