CARTHAGE, Mo. —
Activities abound this week in Carthage, and that’s not taking into account all the events connected to the Maple Leaf Festival.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the McCune-Brooks Healthcare Foundation and Friends of the Foundation are putting on their annual Luncheon, Stroll & Shop event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. At a cost of $10, lunch will be served at Phelps House, 1140 S. Grand Ave., followed by dessert at the historic home of Pat and Judy Goff (just across the street).
There will be a pink boutique of wearable accessories for sale at Phelps House, along with an assortment of sweets by Kate’s, including baklava, scones, coffee cakes and cupcakes. Scone flavors will include apricot, blueberry, cranberry and orange. One dozen of the baklava or scones will cost $19.50. The big crumb coffeecakes will be blueberry, apple or pear, and will cost $11.50. The cupcakes cost $3.50 each and come in flavors of coconut, Italian cream, butterscotch and red velvet.
All of the bakery goodies will be wrapped in pink boxes. There will surely be a pink glow emanating from this area on Wednesday. Wearing pink is optional, but it would certainly be in the spirit of things.
The tradition after the luncheon is to stroll on down Grand Avenue to shop at All Things Grand and Between Friends, which are in easy walking distance.

Proceeds benefit the McCune-Brooks Healthcare Foundation’s mammogram program for women and men who are eligible for no-cost or low-cost mammograms.
Also on Wednesday, the third annual Maple Leaf Plein Air Paint-Out begins. Area artists will stake out their favorite views in Carthage. Stop and say hello if you see them set up randomly around town on Wednesday and Thursday. Registration will take place at 9 a.m. at Cherry’s Custom Framing, 310 Howard St., the sponsor of the event.
Artists should provide all necessary supplies. There is no entry fee for artists.
Display, judging, awards and sale of the completed paintings will take place after 6 p.m. Thursday in the main gallery at Hyde House (artCentral), 1110 E. 13th St. The public may attend. Details: 417-358-2707.
