Spookhouses enter final days of season

— Halloween attractions and events enter their final week of operation. Despite Halloween falling on a Wednesday, several attractions will run for one more weekend — two with dark changes.

The Manor and The Asylum Nightmare will turn all lights off and let attendees walk through with nothing but glow sticks.

“We keep the same audio and characters, and it’s really effective,” said Chris McGowan, co-owner of Asylum. “The bad thing about a glowstick is that when you hold it out, you become a target.”

The following attractions will be open for business throughout the week:

Strangler’s Grove

Strangler’s Grove, at Dover Hill on North Main Street in Joplin, features three main components this year:

• The Strangler’s Grove haunted attraction: A 1/3-mile haunted trail winds through the park.

Based around the crash of a circus train, the trail gives the opportunity for actors to provide the scares, not special effects.

Most of the sets are made from donated or recycled items and decorated to match the circus theme.

• Historic Ghost Tours: Instead of walking through downtown Joplin, storytellers will tell their tales at the top of Dover Hill.

• Scare Faire: An outdoor group of Halloween-related vendors. The festival will include vendors, live music and carnival-style entertainment.

Though the festival is free to attend, admission to the haunted trail and storytelling are $10 each. Value bracelets for both are available for $17. A portion of proceeds will be donated to the Joplin Parks and Recreation Department. The rest will help Dream Theatre acquire and establish a permanent location for future haunts.

Its final night of operation is today.
